Zephaniah Drake opened the Publik House as a stagecoach stop in 1810. The building, which still stands today as a popular inn and restaurant, was also once a liberal art school known as The Chester Institute. Through the years it has also been called the Brick Tavern on several occasions. Today it is once again the Publik House.
