New York Flushing Queens Opening Day of Shea Stadium April 17, 1964
A great view of William A Shea Municipal Stadium, known by all as Shea, on its opening day April 17, 1964. Shea was the home of the expansion New York Mets baseball team who had played for 2 years at the Polo Grounds in Manhattan. Many teams played here during its time. The Jets played there until 1984 when they moved to the Meadowlands in New Jersey. The NY football Giants also played there in 1975 while Yankee Stadium (where they normally played) was undergoing renovations. The New York Yankees also played there while Yankee Stadium was being refurbished. It was one of the oldest stadiums in the National League. Shea finished its run in September 2008. It was demolished shortly after the last game was played. It was replaced by Citi Field which was designed to resemble the famed Ebbet's Field of Brooklyn Dodger fame.
