A vintage style art print of the Boardwalk showing Ocean Avenue in the Borough of Avon-by-the-Sea in Monmouth County New Jersey c 1910. The Borough grew out of the area first know as New Branch or the Swanton Tract. In the 1880's Edward Batchelor, a wealthy Philadelphian, who visted the shore frequently purchased the tract and set upon developing the land for residential use. The twon started to grow as a wealtyresort community. The town was incorporated as "Avon by the Sea" in 1900. Where the name "Avon" came from remains somewhat of a mystery. It is suggested by some that the name "Avon" came from the Avon Inn, constructed in 1883.
